Firstly….. “Hello world”
now that the awkward first date is under our belt, let’s get into it.
We were trying to think of an appropriate name for our blog and during our extensive research, we came across some interesting stuff. So in the spirit of our first blog, we thought we’d discuss the origins of how this mystical creature came to earth.
Apparently the term was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997…… this guy:
The short form, “blog,” was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May 1999.
We think Peter looks slightly less creepy than old man rivers up there (hope he’s not reading this… sorry Jorn!)…there’s also rumours that Pete won’t let people use the word ‘blog’ in interviews with him. Just a rumour perhaps, but we thought it gave him cred – kinda like “I was ‘web logging’ before anyone even knew what a blog was!”…it reminded us of that old chestnut “We were fans of that band before anyone knew who they were!!” … we think we might like Peterme…perhaps it’ll even turn into a ‘we heart’ (don’t quote us, we’re not on friends on facebook yet).
Shortly thereafter, Evan Williams atPyra Labs used “blog” as both a noun and verb (“to blog,” meaning “to edit one’s weblog or to post to one’s weblog”)…he also devised the word ‘blogger’…one thing led to another… which led to the popularization of the terms….blog, blogger…..blogged? He’s now the CEO of twitter… go figure.
go on…press it…you know you want to…
